The Role of Religion

ISW provides our students with opportunities to interact with leaders from various traditions, to learn about world religions, and to think carefully about their own relationships with one another, with their community, with nature, and with their spiritual foundations. We welcome students, families and educators from a variety of religious backgrounds. Our school strives to develop civility toward, respect for, and understanding of difference. ISW is not affiliated with any religious group.

Such happiness as life is capable of comes from the full participation of all our powers in the endeavor to wrest from each changing situation of experience its own full and unique meaning.

John Dewey

The Natural World

Our planet is facing unprecedented environmental challenges. To meet those challenges, young people must develop an understanding of and a love for the environment. ISW offers students the opportunity to study our planet using the Shenandoah Valley and our beautiful mountains as their lab. Our science teachers use an inquiry-based science curriculum (developed by the National Science Foundation and the Smithsonian) that encourages students to examine open-ended questions and to explore the natural world.

ISW also promotes the enjoyment of the natural world for its own sake.  We often hold classes outdoors, and we use school field trips extensively to get us out of our chairs and into the larger world.

Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination.

John Dewey

Educational Technology

At ISW, we aspire to the best educational technology our world has to offer. We embrace technologies that lead us back to one another and that enhance our growth as human beings within a community. Educational technology should capitalize on what is best in the classroom. We introduce it with careful planning.

Our youngest students devote themselves to hands-on, nature-oriented, experiential learning. Students of this age need to move and explore the real world rather than the virtual world of screens. We very deliberately employ a “no screens” policy  in our elementary classrooms.

Formal technology instruction begins in the 5th grade, where it is gradually integrated into the classroom. We work toward three goals beginning in 5th grade: technology literacy, technology fluency, and digital citizenship. Tomorrow’s adults need confidence using technology as a practical tool as well as wisdom about its place in modern life. We assist ISW students in developing both. For Middle and High School, our students bring their own laptops to school and use them daily. Students regularly use the full Google Suite, build their own websites, and create presentations using a wide variety of platforms. Our faculty is full engaged in exploring the possibilities as well as the pitfalls of emerging artificial intelligence technologies.

ISW Mission

Our mission is to create a learning environment where young people discover and develop their own unique abilities: to think logically and critically, to effect positive change in the world, and to approach life with an open heart.

ISW admits students of any race, color, religion, sex, gender,  sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities available at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin in its administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

ISW is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

ISW Philosophy

We believe the future will be characterized by:

  • Change—social, cultural, environmental, and technological–on an unprecedented scale, at an unprecedented pace.
  • An economy that is ever more globalized and highly diverse.
  • A high degree of conflict and opportunity.

We believe that to be successful students will need:

  • Confidence.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Intellectual acuity and flexibility.
  • Love for the natural world and the humans who inhabit it.
  • Commitment to work for peace—local, regional, and global.
  • Moral and spiritual centeredness.
  • Familiarity and ease interacting with many cultures.
  • Understanding of technology as a practical tool and wisdom about its use.

The ISW Philosophy:

The Independent School of Winchester (ISW) provides academic challenges for young people with a curriculum built upon the work of progressive educators including:

  • Maria Montessori
  • John Dewey
  • Reggio-Emilia
  • Howard Gardner
  • Alfie Kohn
  • Sir Ken Robinson

In an environment grounded in strong spiritual values from a multiplicity of traditions, our school incorporates the latest research on how the young brain functions. ISW students develop critical thinking skills as well as solid relationships—with self, with family, with peers, with community members of all ages, and with nature. Teachers and parents play significant roles in this process. Together, we affirm the school’s mission, to create a learning environment where young people discover and develop their own unique abilities: to think logically and critically, to effect positive change in the world, and to approach life with an open heart.

Education, therefore, is a process of living and not a preparation for future living.
